This is an outstanding article and it’s certainly generous of Yaro to share this type of first hand experience. I believe the key to any successful online business is to ultimately keep your overhead expenses extremely low. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to accomplish that with an online business like doing your own marketing, only paying for B2B services if absolutely necessary, etc. For example, most businesses, even if they are purely internet based, often benefit from having a fax number and using an email fax service compared with traditional fax is definitely an easy way to save money. Even though most people consider faxes to be a thing of the past, most would be surprised how often faxes are still used and using an online fax service that delivers faxes straight to your email is a great way to save time.

Blogging is something that requires patience, persistence and discipline. It may mean writing everyday for over a year before you really start to see any money from it. There are exceptions to the rule, but from my dealings with other bloggers, it seems to be pretty common to spend one or even two years building your blog, your brand and your authority, before making any serious amount of money.
I started earning money online about 3 years ago after being made redundant, it involves hard work, long hours, commitment and of course a bit of cash to get going. I stared with less than £100 and now I wouldn’t work for someone else again , I enjoy the freedom working from home gives me. I don’t earn a fortune ( £3000 – £4000 per month) but I manage to pay the mortgage, go on holiday 3 times a year and give my daughter everything she needs (and wants). So the moral of this comment is work hard and you get out what you put in.
Travel blogging is a hard industry to break into. However, the rewards can be worth it, and let’s face it, who doesn’t want to be paid for traveling around the world! There are numerous ways to monetize a travel blog, but affiliate marketing should predominantly be your focus. On your blog, promote hotels, tours, equipment hire services, flights, and anything else travel related. Then take a cut of the proceeds as your audience books their holidays based on your recommendations.

Hi Yaro, thanks for a really helpful and practical post. I’ve been attempting to earn a living online for a while now, through selling handmade products. Turns out that with the amount of time that goes into it and how little people are prepared to pay, this has not been a profitable venture for me! I’m now trying a different approach by building a content based blog and hopefully soon will start selling information based product. My blog is still just a baby (I only started it a couple of weeks ago), so I know I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me still! I’m not naturally gifted at online entrepreneurial stuff so I have found this blog and your reports to be an invaluable resource. Thank you so much! Now I just need to roll up my sleeves and give it a go!
Do you see all of those articles, tutorials and guides all over the Internet? Somebody wrote every one of them! If you have decent writing ability (no, you don’t need a journalism degree!), and knowledge in a few specific topic areas, you can be one of those writers. It’s an opportunity to make money online and without ever leaving your home. It’s also the kind of venture that can start out as a small side business, but grow into a full-time career.
If you have a background in marketing and a passion for a particular niche, then organizing a virtual event may be just up your street. A virtual event could span across a day or longer. Individual live sessions would be run by experts in the field. And conference features would include live question and answer sessions, forums, and plenty of free giveaways. Visitors to the virtual event would pay to attend, so the more effective your promotion of the event the more money you would make.
One should think about their skills, hobbies and basic daily habits as well. Do you like to cook? Be a personal cook or dinner parties. Baking? Make wedding cakes or cupcakes for weddings/special events. Do you enjoy cleaning? Trying going to banks/repo companies and ask if they are in need of a repo cleaner or market yourself as a all-around cleaner. Know how to mow a lawn? Get paid to do it in your neighborhood. Sell products from large companies – Jewelry in a candle, Sentsy, Health and home products – etc.

Good stuff man. I think it’s quite common to see that a lot of us that are in the world of online business regularly starting with eBay (I know I did hehe). I think, overall, the important thing to learn when you’re first beginning is to get into the process of ‘doing’ and then taking very detailed notes so you can devise a systematic approach to your work.

I have a website that is getting a decent amount of traffic. Even though the traffic is not a lot, the visitors are VERY targeted. The visitors are people looking for specific jobs. I am trying to get employers to sponsor ads. I find that the employers have no clue how powerful a targeted lead is and they don’t respond to my requests for ad placement. How do you suggest I get sponsors? Thanks.

Multi-vendor marketplaces, like ThemeForest, can be very successful. Chose a niche and create a vendor website for it. Your marketplace could be anything, from a platform for local artists to sell their work on, to an online digital product store. Once set up, invite people in that industry to sell their products on your site. You take a percentage of their profits when items sell.
These mega-sites make it easy to set up shop so customers can browse your products, and there's no need to build your own website. Also, you’ll find a built-in search feature so that interested buyers can easily find your online storefront. Plus, you get to use the site's shopping cart. In short, you avoid a lot of the expense and hassle of setting up an independent e-commerce website.
Research other listings in your city on AirBnB and see what the going rate is for a place like yours. You could also just rent out a private room as well or even a bed in a shared room. In fact, that's how AirBnB got its start. However, you might find it hard in the beginning without reviews, but as long as you take really good care of your guests and provide a lot of value, the reviews will eventually come rolling in.

I stopped using this method once I started my own card game site (more on this below), however I still believe niche collectables, particularly in a market that you really love, is a fantastic starting point to gain experience making money online. Like eBay you can make money selling secondhand items in community sites if you can find a way to source product at cost or below. It’s not a model that has much margin so again the challenge is to scale if you want to make significant profit.
Online savings accounts usually come with crazy good interest rates to help you grow your money faster (regular in-person banks can’t offer rates as high). We’re fans of CIT Bank and Discover Bank (among others) because their interest rates are often over 25 times the national average. That means the money in your savings account will grow 25 times faster than the pace it’s most likely growing at now. Really, though, you can’t go wrong with pretty much any online savings account that offers over 1.50% APY 🙂
